Intel plans to cut thousands of jobs: Report

Intel Corp is planning to cut thousands of jobs this spring, including reducing headcount in some business units by double-digit percentages, news website Oregonlive said, citing sources inside the company familiar with the plan.

The job cuts at the world's largest chipmaker this year will be considerably larger than the more than 1,100 US jobs eliminated last year, Oregonlive said.

Intel is also looking to consolidate some operations and close some smaller outposts after a series of acquisitions Oregonlive said on Friday.

The job cuts, which could also include top executive roles, could begin soon after the company reports its first-quarter results on Tuesday, Oregonlive said.

Intel, which had 107,300 employees as of December 26, declined to comment

The company had said in 2014 it planned to reduce its global workforce by about 5%, or more than 5,000 positions, as it struggled with falling personal-computer sales and shifted focus to faster-growing areas.

Last week Intel said two senior executives would leave.

Suspect in Delhi's serial dog killing arrested in Lucknow

MUMBAI: The Green Park Metro serial dog killer suspect has now been arrested and has been sent to All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi for a medical examination. This arrest comes after Humane Society International/India (HSI/Inda) and Fauna Police, on March 19, had announced a reward for information leading to identification of the perpetrator. The organizations had then received a call and worked with the Delhi Police to track down the accused in Lucknow. The suspect is now under custody and HSI/India has demanded jail time and psychiatric intervention for the alleged dog killer.

On March 15, 2016, the CCTV camera of a store located opposite the Green Park Metro captured a horrific act of cruelty. A man was luring puppies and dogs with bits of food only to grab them to stab and hack them. The video showed the young unidentified male luring and then stabbing a puppy multiple times before ripping the dog into two. Dogs who approached the man were also stabbed and grievously injured. A similar incident is reported to have occurred in the Gautham Nagar neighborhood of New Delhi where dogs were seen with stab wounds. Fauna Police volunteers suspect that it is the same person.

N G Jayasimha, managing director of HSI/India says; "The CCTV footage of the brutal stabbing of the puppies had shocked the nation. We have been working with Fauna Police to ensure the suspect is caught. We thank the Delhi Police for taking up the matter with such seriousness and making such headway in the case. We are delighted that the suspect has been arrested. We hope that there will be a speedy trial and he will be convicted soon"

The arrest of the Green Park Metro serial dog killer suspect comes only two days after the successful arrest of alleged dog rapist in Kerala. In the recent past, HSI/India has come across many animal abuse/cruelty issues through videos, posts and articles on Facebook, Twitter and print media. HSI/India offers rewards in animal cruelty cases across the country with an aim to hold animal abusers accountable for their crimes and thus establish deterrence to prevent future cases of animal cruelty.

Anyone with questions about this case is requested to call the Abhinav Srihan of Fauna Police at +91 9212111116.

Thailand's PM says women in skimpy dress are like unwrapped candy

BANGKOK: Thailand's prime minister has some advice for his country's young women: Don't dress too revealingly, or you will be shunned like a piece of toffee without its wrapper.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha offered the observation Tuesday to reporters as Thais prepared to kick off their traditional New Year celebration, known as Songkran. The holiday comes at the hottest time of the year and is best known for the enthusiastic splashing of water upon friends and strangers alike, a practice that sometimes takes on a sexual edge.

Thailand's military government already had announced that it would try to discourage lewd behavior and dress as inappropriate for the country's culture.

Prayuth qualified his own advice, saying that some nicely wrapped candy will stay on the shelf for years no matter what.

Delhi girl among 3 who say they were raped at Murthal

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Police have added gang rape charges to the FIR in the infamous Murthal case in which women are believed to have been raped during the Jat quota stir violence. The charges have been added after three women have stated that they were raped in Murthal near Delhi during the peak of the violence in February.

Of the three, two women sent anonymous letters with details of the rapes that took place between February 21 and 22. Senior lawyer Anupam Gupta, who is assisting the Punjab and Haryana high court as amicus curiae in the case, has said that he has an audio recording of the third girl from East Delhi. He has, however, not shared the evidence with the court for now.

One letter, sent by an Australian NRI, has been circulating on social media. The other, received by the Farida bad police, is from a girl living in a hostel who was allegedly raped while crossing NH-1.

This is the first time the cops have admitted to the seriousness of the alleged crimes committed at Murthal. Mamta Singh, IGP (south range) and special investigation team head, submitted a status report before the Punjab and Haryana HC on Monday saying Section 376 (D) (gang rape) of the IPC has been added to the existing FIR. The initial FIR of molestation was registered on March 30 on a complaint by Delhi resident Bobby Joshi who was at Murthal during the time the rapes are believed to have taken place. The high court had taken suo motu cognisance of newspaper reports which said that at least 10 women were raped at the spot that day.

The NRI survivor's letter is already viral on social media, where she mentions that she had reached the Delhi airport from Australia on February 21 and was travelling on NH 1 when she was allegedly raped. The police have requested a foreign regional registration officer in Delhi to provide details of NRIs arriving from Australia during that time.

The other survivor had posted an anonymous letter from Mathura Road in Faridabad on March 5. Police officials are examining call records of the area to identify a number that may be common with the travellers who were at Murthal on February 21 and 22. The Faridabad survivor has stated that she is a final-year student of a degree course and was on way to her home with her father on the day she was raped.

Adjourning the hearing for May 4, the court has asked for May 4, the court has asked the SIT to submit a status report on the probes. A bench headed by Justice S S Saron also clarified that the SIT would work independently.

Gupta on Monday turned down the SIT's request to share video and audio tapes related to the alleged rapes for the time being. "Their (police's) move is from complete denial to acknowledgement. I don't have much faith in Haryana police and there is danger of subversion of justice," he said.

In her report, SIT head and IPS officer Mamta Singh has stated that 161 travelers who were in Murthal on the day have been identified.

Couple takes selfie with jeep on track, has a lucky escape

bengaluru: A speeding train, a jeep in the middle of the track and a couple posing for selfies. In reel life this could pass off as super human but in reality it was a disaster in the making. Save, the duo managed to escape death by a whisker.

In what could have turned into a major tragedy, a speeding passenger train rammed an open jeep parked on the railway track in Basavapura railway gate, Ramanagaram, on Saturday morning. Moments before, its occupants were engrossed taking selfies, oblivious of the approaching train.

The city-based couple who was indulging in a selfie spree escaped unhurt after they managed to notice the train at the last moment. However, the vehicle was completely damaged in the accident that took place around 7.45am.

Software engineer Sandeep and his wife Pratibha, residents of Kothanur Dinne in JP Nagar, were on a picnic and driving towards Channapatna, when they stopped at Basavapura railway gate, police said.
"They parked the jeep right in the middle of the track and started clicking selfie from different angles. Meanwhile, Mangala Express, running between Mangaluru and Bengaluru via Mysuru, was approaching ," police said.

Luckily, the train, with 800 passengers on board, had just left the Ramanagaram station and was moving at a speed of 50kmph.

"The loco pilot said he kept honking fearing the worst. However, the couple noticed the approaching train only when passersby began screaming at them," police said. The train was barely 20 metres away when the two jumped from the vehicle and escaped.

Railway police have booked Sandeep and Pratibha for negligence and have registered case against them.

North Pole had ice-free summers 6 to 10 million years ago: Study

BERLIN: The central Arctic was completely ice-free during summers some six to 10 million years ago and the sea-surface temperature reached four to nine degrees Celsius, a new study has found.

In spring, autumn and winter, however, the ocean was covered by sea ice of variable extent, researchers said.

The scientists recovered sediment cores from the Lomonosov Ridge, a large undersea mountain range in the central Arctic.

"This slope must have experienced gigantic recurring landslides in the past, which resulted in the exhumation of more than 500-metre thick ancient sediment and rock formations," said Ruediger Stein, said from Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Germany.

"We were also surprised about the wide-spread occurrence of these slide scars, which extend over a length of more than 300 kilometres, almost from the North Pole to the southern end of the ridge on the Siberian side," said Stein, expedition leader and lead author of the study.

Within a two-days coring action, researchers took 18 sediment cores from the Lomonosov Ridge. Although the recovered sediment cores were only four to eight metres long, one of them turned out to be precisely one of those climate archives that the scientists had been looking for a long time.

"Our data clearly indicate that six to ten million years ago, the North Pole and the entire central Arctic Ocean must in fact have been ice-free in the summer," said Stein.

This statement is based on studies of organic compounds that were produced by certain organisms that lived in the Arctic Ocean at that time and that have been preserved in the sediment deposits.

"The first group of biomarkers is derived from carbonaceous algae that live in surface water, ie they need open water and, being plants, depend on light," said Stein.

"Since in the central Arctic Ocean sunlight is only available during the spring and summer months and is pitch-dark at all other times, the data derived from these carbonaceous algae provide us with information about the surface water conditions during the summer period," he said.

These carbonaceous algae produce different biomarker compounds depending on the water temperature.

"These molecules allowed us to estimate that the surface water temperature of the Arctic Ocean was approximately 4 to 9 degrees Celsius in the late Miocene," Stein said.

The second group of biomarkers shows, the Arctic Ocean was not ice-free all year round. It is formed by specific diatoms that live in the Arctic sea ice.

"The seasonal ice cover around the North Pole must have been similar to that in the Arctic marginal seas today," Stein said.

The study was published in the journal Nature Communications.

One in three calls to suicide helplines is about heartbreak

Actor Pratyusha Banerjee's suicide last week came as a rude jolt to the world of showbiz. Shocking allegations against her boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh piled up, underlining the lethal power of love gone wrong. In 2013, Jiah Khan's death and a farewell letter to her beau Sooraj Pancholi had created a similar storm. While these two cases made headlines, they're hardly exceptions. In fact, love accounts for one out of three calls received by some suicide helplines.

Hyderabad-based helpline, Onelife, receives 20-25 calls every day. Nearly 30% deal with love and heartbreak. Mumbai-based Aasra gets over 100 calls a day, of which around 35 are related to break-ups and gender violence. "Nearly 60% of our callers talk about relationship issues," says Akku, coordinator at Bengaluru-based Sahai, which gets an average of 800 calls a year.

So what makes love a reason to kill oneself? "People with a suicidal impulse usually have tunnel vision for their romantic partners. When a long relationship ends, they struggle to imagine their life without it," says Sujatha, coordinator, Onelife. Dr Shyam Bhat, psychiatrist and founder of Seraniti.com, agrees. "Research shows that romantic love can become addictive and its loss causes the same changes in brain chemistry that are seen in physical trauma."

Shreya (name changed) was on the brink of attempting suicide last year when her boyfriend abandoned her over a misunderstanding. "Now I feel it was stupid. But back then, the pain was so overwhelming that I just wanted it to end," she says. "I had sleeping pills in my hand when my brother happened to call. He knew I was going through a rough time, so he reiterated my family's unconditional support for me. That call saved my life."

Often, it's about that one timely call. Mamta Vaish, a counsellor at Sanjivini Society for Mental Health, says a person in such a situation needs to vent. "Hear them out without judging them, or belittling the issue. Pain reduces when a person is understood," says Vaish. Distractions like a movie or a shopping spree may not work.

This is where professional help comes in. "I remember spending my first three sessions just crying in front of the counsellor," says Shreya. "Telling her everything made me feel light." After six sessions, Shreya had begun to plan new career goals. However, the biggest hurdles for psychologists is lack of awareness and the stigma attached to depression. "When a prominent person commits suicide, it makes people realize that depression can happen to anyone," says Akku, adding that calls to Sahai usually spike after a celebrity suicide.

Society is also to blame for the unrealistic expectations we place on love. "We worry about what people think of us," says psychologist Varkha Chulani. This eventually translates to 'you are nothing without love, and the only way to feel good about yourself is when others, especially the significant other, love you'. The same ideas are showcased on TV and in movies. "Moreover, these days, people are quick to get into relationships and declare 'love forever after' for each other on social media," says ?Dr Rajesh Goyal, consultant psychiatrist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. "When the reality differs from this ideal, these individuals are not able to cope with the consequences. In pre-social media times, people would take time to form relationships and tell others much later."
The highest-risk age-group is 15-35 years, says Johnson Thomas, director of Aasra. Nearly 50% of the 2,500-plus callers at Onelife have been in the 18-25 bracket. Although urban helplines record failed relationships as the top reason among callers, National Crime Record Bureau's 2014 data cites "love affairs" in only 3.2% of suicide cases. "Family problems" and "illness" top the causes for death by suicide, and are cited in 21.7% and 18% of cases respectively.

A suicide is usually followed by a police investigation into what pushed the victim over the edge. In the case of love, that may turn out to be a grey area at times. "Suicide is never a rational decision. Sadly, most people in our country believe there must be an understandable cause for a suicide," says Dr Bhat. "When you have a wound, even a gentle breeze will hurt your skin. The same is true of the mind. Any stressful event can precipitate suicide in a vulnerable person." The solution then is to offer support and get professional help for anyone who is going through significant emotional stress.
