Buying guide: 4 best phones to buy under Rs.10,000

Gone are the days when you had to contend with mediocre specs on a phone that cost under Rs.10,000. That's not all. It is now possible to buy a good phone at a price as low as Rs.5,000. A couple of years ago, the best you could think of at this price range was probably feature phones or smartphones that well, sucked. Not anymore.

The under Rs.10,000 price point is all about value for money, and there are quite a few interesting phones - in this range -- that you can buy right now without blinking an eye. If you're looking to buy a phone that costs not more than Rs.10,000 well, the following list should help you make an informed choice.

Xiaomi's Redmi 2 was (is) a pretty good phone that you can buy. Enter Redmi 2 Prime and things get only better. Also, this is a special phone, that's a little more than just about the specs. The Redmi 2 Prime is manufactured locally in India, and as such is part of Xiaomi's tie up with the government's 'Make in India' campaign.
Moving on, the Redmi 2 Prime offers a balanced mix of good looks, good performance, good camera and good battery life. And, it costs just Rs.6,999 to own one. It comes with a 4.7-inch HD IPS display with a 720x1280 pixels resolution. The Redmi 2 Prime has a very good display for an HD screen. It is bright and punchy with good viewing angles.
The Redmi 2 Prime is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with 2GB RAM. It comes with 16GB of internal memory which is expandable by up to 32GB via microSD. The phone runs Android 4.4 KitKat-based MIUI 6 out-of-the-box, which is upgradable to Lollipop-based MIUI 7. Although, the Redmi 2 felt a little sluggish the Redmi 2 Prime (thanks to an added gig of RAM) is faster and more responsive. Still, you will have to get used to its fancy animations scheme to enjoy the best of it.
The Redmi 2 Prime comes with an 8-megapixel camera on the rear (with flash) and provides reliable performance in both low-light and brightly lit scenes just like the Redmi 2 (and theRedmi 1S before it). At its price the Redmi 2 Prime is one of the better camera phones you can buy. There's also a 2-megapixel camera on the front.
The Redmi 2 Prime is 4G LTE capable and uses a 2,200 mAh battery which offers decent battery life.
Lenovo K3 Note
Just in: Lenovo has announced that it has sold over 1 million K3 Note phones on Flipkart during the past four months of its sales. The K3 Note went on sale for the first time on July 8. At Rs. 9,999 it is a fantastic phone that you can buy. There are two key reasons: one is its screen size which is 5.5-inch FullHD, second is that it comes with Dolby Atmos technology for better audio output. Even without Dolby Atmos (you will need supporting content to make use of it), the K3 Note has a nice speaker.
Top that up with the fact that it is fast. It is powered by a 1.7GHz octa-core Mediatek MT6752 processor with 2GB RAM. It comes with 16GB of internal memory which is expandable by up to 32GB via microSD. The phone runs Android 5.0 Lollipop-based Vibe UI, which is slick and gives you good customisation options.
The K3 Note sports a 13-megapixel camera on the rear with flash. There's also a 5-megapixel camera on the front. Camera performance however is average at best, nothing out of the ordinary. Still, at Rs.9,999 the K3 Note is not entirely a disappointment.
The phone is 4G LTE capable and uses a 2,900mAh battery, which offers impressive battery life.
If you're willing to let go of the fact that it has an average camera, the K3 Note is one of the best phones you can buy right now at under Rs.10,000.
Asus has launched a number of ZenFone 2 variants, and confused us all with its pathetic naming conventions. Still, you can't help but notice that the Zenfone 2 Laser ZE550KL is quite the bang for the buck phone at Rs.9,999. Primarily designed as a camera phone, there's so much more that it can do. And by the way, it is the first phone in its price range to offer Laser Autofocus technology for quick focus, and it works well too.
You get a 5.5-inch FullHD screen which is good enough and offers good viewing angles (not as bright as the K3 Note though). It is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with 2GB RAM (which is the same deal as the Redmi 2 Prime). Performance is good for the price and multitasking on the 5.5-inch screen is fluid. It runs Android 5.0 Lollipop-based ZenUI on top, which is good but adds in way too many unwanted apps.
The Zenfone 2 Laser sports a 13-megapixel camera on the rear with dualLED (dual-tone) flash. There's a 5-megapixel camera on the front. The rear camera clicks some good quality photos in good lighting conditions. The camera is quite good for macro photography.
The 4G LTE capable phone uses a 3,000mAh battery that offers impressive battery life.
Yu Yunique
The Yu Yunique costs just Rs.4,999 and is the cheapest phone right now that comes packed with an almost-unmodified version of Android Lollipop. According to YU, the next version of CynaogenMod, which will be based on Android Lollipop, will be available to Yunique users at a later date. So basically, you will have an option to choose two operating systems.
But that's not all. It's the price point that makes the Yunique so very attractive. It comes with a 4.7-inch HD screen which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The display is sharp and offers good viewing angles. Colour accuracy and brightness are slightly off, but remember this is a phone that costs just Rs.5,000.
It is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with 1GB RAM. Decent hardware and Android Lollipop make the Yunique a fairly fast phone. It comes with 8GB of internal memory which is expandable by up to 32GB via microSD.
The Yunique sports an 8-megapixel camera on the back (with flash) and a 2-megapixel one on the front. The rear camera is fairly impressive for the price. It clicks images with lots of details and pleasing colours. There is very less noise in these photos which is nice. One flipside: irrespective of the lighting conditions, the phone oversharpens images (during processing) so sometimes you get unnatural looking photos.
The 4G LTE capable phone uses a 2,000mAh battery which may appear small on paper, but offers good battery life. All in all if you have a budget of Rs.5,000 you can go buy the Yunique right now.
